Number parking lot: a 15-minute preschool math activity for numbers 1 to 10
What it is: a preschool math game where students drive a toy car into a parking spot that matches a number card. It links the number they hear, the numeral they see and a count of dots.
Time: about 15 minutes. Grade: Pre-K (ages 4 to 5).
Materials: painter's tape, a marker, 10 index cards with the numbers 1 to 10 and matching dots, and 3 or 4 large toy cars or blocks (bigger than a student's fist).
- Make 10 parking spots on the floor with tape. Write one number in each spot and draw the same number of dots next to it.
- Show a card. Students count the dots on the card together, touching the air for each dot.
- One student drives a car to the spot with the same number and says it: "I parked in 6."
- The class checks by counting the dots in the spot out loud.
- Mix it up: say a number without showing the card, so students find it by the numeral alone.
- To finish, drive one car along the row while everyone counts from 1 to 10.
Safety: use toy cars or blocks too big to fit in a mouth, and keep the tape flat so no one trips.
Differentiation: start with spots 1 to 5 for students who are new to numbers. Students who are ready can park two cars and say how many spots are between them. English learners can point and say the number in their home language first.
Quick check: point to three spots in a random order. Each student you ask says the number and shows it with fingers.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
