Coin riddles: a 20-minute 1st grade money game

Coin riddles (Grade 1): Read the clues, check the coins, write your own riddle

What it is: a 1st grade math game where students solve riddles about U.S. coins using real clues: color, size, edge and value. The surprise that the dime is smaller than the nickel but worth more helps students learn that the size of a coin does not tell its value.

Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: 1st grade.

Materials: one penny, nickel, dime and quarter for each pair (or coin pictures), a magnifying glass if you have one, and riddle cards written on index cards.

  1. Read a model riddle: "I am silver. My edge is bumpy. I am the smallest coin, but I am worth 10 cents. What am I?" (a dime)
  2. Pairs look closely at their coins and feel the edges to check the answer.
  3. Read 5 more riddles, for example: "I am brown and worth 1 cent." "I am bigger than a dime and smooth. I am worth 5 cents." "I am the biggest of the four and worth 25 cents."
  4. Pairs hold up the coin that answers each riddle.
  5. Each pair writes a new riddle with two clues about how the coin looks and one clue about its value.
  6. Pairs trade riddles and solve each other's.

Safety: count the coins in and out, and remind students to keep coins out of their mouths. Wash hands after handling money.

Differentiation: students who need support use a coin chart with names and values. Students who are ready write a riddle about two coins together: "We are two coins that make 30 cents." English learners can use the words bigger, smaller, smooth and bumpy.

Quick check: ask a student which coin is worth more, a nickel or a dime, and which one is bigger.

Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
