Ad detectives: a 30-minute lesson on how ads persuade, grades 3–5
What it is: a grades 3–5 media lesson where students study made-up ads and name the persuasion trick in each one: everyone has it, a hero likes it, a limited-time rush, a big promise, or a surprise gift. Students learn that ads are made to sell, and that U.S. law expects ads to be truthful.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 3rd to 5th grade.
Materials: six made-up ads you write on cards ("Everyone in town has SuperSneaks.", "Hurry, only today.", "Zoom Gum makes you run faster."), a trick chart with five pictures, sticky notes.
- Ask: "Why do companies make ads?" Agree that ads help businesses find customers and are made to persuade.
- Introduce five tricks with a quick example each: everyone has it, a hero likes it, hurry, big promise, free gift.
- Teams get two ad cards. They label the trick with a sticky note and underline the words that give it away.
- Teams ask one more question about each ad: "Could this be true? How would we check?" Point out that "makes you run faster" is a claim someone should be able to prove.
- Share: each team reads one ad and names the trick. The class gives a thumbs up or down for whether they agree.
- Finish by having each team rewrite one ad so it is honest and still makes someone want to buy.
Differentiation: students who need support work with three tricks instead of five. Students who are ready invent an ad for a classroom product and trade it so another team finds the trick. English learners can match ad cards to pictures of the tricks before writing.
Quick check: read "Only 3 left, buy now." and ask a student to name the trick.
