Business name ideas for kids: a 30-minute naming and memory test
What it is: a grades 3–5 game where teams brainstorm names for a pretend business, then run a simple memory test: after 10 minutes of other work, how many classmates still remember each name? Students learn that a good business name is easy to say, spell and remember, which matches the U.S. Small Business Administration's advice to choose a name that reflects the brand.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 3rd to 5th grade.
Materials: paper, a timer, the board, and a list of pretend businesses (dog walking, bike repair, cupcake stand, plant care, homework helper).
- Write one pretend business on the board, such as dog walking. Ask the class for names and write 8 to 10 of them.
- Teach a three-part test for names: easy to say, easy to spell, tells what you do (or makes you smile).
- Teams of three choose a different pretend business and write 5 names, then pick their best 2.
- Each team says its 2 names out loud one time only. Do not write them on the board.
- Set a 10-minute timer and do something unrelated, like a short math warm-up.
- When the timer ends, every student writes down all the business names they remember. Tally the results on the board.
- Discuss: "Which names were remembered most? What do they have in common?" Look for rhymes, short words and clear meaning.
Differentiation: students who need support work from a word bank of starter words (paws, pals, quick, shine, fix). Students who are ready also design a 3-word slogan for their winning name. English learners can test names in both languages and notice which work in both.
Quick check: ask a student to explain why "Paw Pals Walking" might be easier to remember than "Animal Exercise Services."
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
