Fair reviews for kids: a 30-minute lesson on honest product feedback
What it is: a grades 3–5 lesson where students test ordinary classroom supplies and write short reviews that are honest, specific and kind. Students learn how reviews help customers and businesses, and why made-up reviews are unfair. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission has rules against fake reviews.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 3rd to 5th grade.
Materials: three unlabeled versions of the same classroom item (three kinds of glue sticks or three pencils with no brand showing), a review card for each student with 5 stars, a "what I liked" line and a "what could be better" line.
- Ask: "Have you ever chosen something because someone said it was good?" Explain that a review is a customer's report to other customers.
- Read two sample reviews you wrote: "Best pencil ever." and "The tip broke twice in 10 minutes, but it was easy to erase. 3 stars." Ask which one helps more and why.
- Teach the rule: a fair review says what happened, gives a reason, and is kind to the people who made the product.
- Students test items A, B and C for 5 minutes (write a line, erase, drop on the desk) and take notes.
- Each student writes one review for one item, with stars and two specific reasons.
- Read a few aloud. Ask: "Why is it unfair if a business writes fake reviews about itself?" Connect to honesty and trust.
Differentiation: students who need support use frames: "I gave it ___ stars because ___." Students who are ready write a reply as the business owner, thanking the reviewer and explaining a fix. English learners can use a word bank: smooth, breaks, strong, messy, easy.
Quick check: show a review that says only "Bad." Ask a student to make it more helpful.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
