Coordinate plane mystery picture: a 30-minute 5th grade math activity
What it is: a 5th grade math activity where students plot a list of ordered pairs on the first quadrant of a coordinate plane and connect them in order to reveal a mystery picture. Then they design their own picture and write the coordinates for a partner.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 5th grade.
Materials: coordinate grid paper (0 to 12 on both axes), a list of 15 to 20 ordered pairs that make a simple picture (such as a sailboat or a house), rulers and pencils.
- Review: the first number tells how far to move across (x), the second how far to move up (y). Plot (3, 5) together.
- Show a common mistake, plotting (5, 3) instead, and ask why the order matters.
- Students plot the mystery points and connect them in order with a ruler.
- Students draw their own simple picture on the grid using only points where lines cross, and list the coordinates.
- Partners swap lists and plot each other's pictures.
Differentiation: students who need support get a list with the first few points already plotted. Students who are ready use all four quadrants with negative numbers. English learners can use the frame "Go across ___, go up ___."
Quick check: plot a point and ask a student to name its ordered pair.
