Decimals and fractions match: tenths and hundredths in 4th grade
What it is: a 4th grade math activity where students shade hundred grids and match each picture with a fraction card and a decimal card: 3/10 = 0.3 = 30/100. Students see that tenths and hundredths are two ways to name the same amount.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 4th grade.
Materials: hundred-grid sheets, colored pencils, and a matching set of cards: grids, fractions (tenths and hundredths) and decimals.
- Shade one column of a hundred grid. Ask: "What fraction is shaded? Is there another name?" Write 1/10 = 10/100 = 0.1.
- Shade 25 squares and write 25/100 and 0.25. Point out the tenths and hundredths places.
- Groups play a three-way match: a grid card, a fraction card and a decimal card that all show the same amount.
- Groups shade their own grid for 0.6 and 0.06 and explain the difference.
- Order 5 of the decimals from least to greatest using the grids.
Differentiation: students who need support match tenths only. Students who are ready compare decimals like 0.5 and 0.45 and explain which is greater. English learners can use the words tenths, hundredths, shade and equal.
Quick check: ask a student to write 7/100 as a decimal and shade it on a grid.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
