Disc golf at school: a 35-minute PE game for 6th grade
What it is: a 6th grade PE game based on disc golf, a lifetime sport that needs no court. Students learn a backhand throw, play a 6-hole course with hoop or basket targets, and keep score by counting throws, where fewer is better.
Time: about 35 minutes. Grade: 6th grade (grades 6–8).
Materials: one flying disc per student or pair (or a sturdy paper plate), 6 targets (hoops on the ground, laundry baskets or cones), 6 tee markers, score cards and pencils, and a field or large gym.
- Teach the backhand: stand sideways to the target, thumb on top and fingers underneath, reach the disc across your body, step toward the target and snap it out flat at chest height.
- Practice in pairs, throwing to each other from 10 steps apart, 10 throws each.
- Walk the course with students: 6 holes, each with a tee and a target 15 to 40 steps apart.
- Groups of 3 or 4 start at different holes. Each player throws from the tee, then from where the disc lands, until it touches the target.
- Record throws on each hole. Set a par for each hole (2, 3 or 4) together as a class.
- Talk it over: "Which hole was your best? What changed in your throw?"
Safety: throw only when the landing area is clear and the group calls "clear"; players wait behind the thrower; lay out holes so no throwing lane crosses another; take water between holes on warm days. Every session: warm up first, clear the space, keep water nearby, and stop if anything hurts or a student feels dizzy or unwell.
Differentiation: students who need support can throw underhand or use a closer tee. Students who use wheelchairs can throw from a seated tee to the same targets. Students who are ready can try a forehand throw on one hole. English learners can use the terms tee, par and target.
Quick check: ask a student to show the backhand grip and explain what par means.
