Reaction time ruler drop: a 25-minute PE and science lab for 6th grade
What it is: a 6th grade PE and science lab where partners measure reaction time by catching a falling ruler, convert the distance into seconds, and test what changes it. Reaction time matters in nearly every sport, and students see that practice and focus can change their own results.
Time: about 25 minutes. Grade: 6th grade (grades 6–8).
Materials: a 12-inch ruler per pair, a recording sheet, and this conversion table: 2 in = 0.10 s, 4 in = 0.14 s, 6 in = 0.18 s, 8 in = 0.20 s, 10 in = 0.23 s, 12 in = 0.25 s.
- Partner A holds the ruler at the top, zero end down. Partner B places thumb and pointer finger on either side of the zero mark without touching it.
- Without warning, Partner A lets go. Partner B catches the ruler as fast as possible. Read the inch mark just above the thumb.
- Do 5 tries, record each one and switch roles. Use the table to turn the middle value (the median) into seconds.
- Predict, then test one change: the other hand, eyes closed with a tap on the shoulder as the signal, or right after 30 seconds of jumping jacks.
- Compare class results: what made reaction time faster or slower?
- Connect to sport: where do athletes need quick reactions, and how do they train them (practice, focus, reading cues)?
Safety: drop the ruler straight down, never toward a face; the jumping jacks are a short burst with soft landings and a rest afterward; students who feel dizzy sit down and stop. Every session: warm up first, clear the space, keep water nearby, and stop if anything hurts or a student feels dizzy or unwell.
Differentiation: students who need support can catch a yardstick and record distance only. Students who are ready can calculate the time themselves with t = √(2d ÷ g), using d in meters and g = 9.8. English learners can use the frame "My reaction time was __ seconds."
Quick check: ask a student to turn a 6-inch catch into seconds and name one thing that changed their results.
