Dot plate quick look: a 10-minute preschool number sense game

@UpOnlyLearningUpOnly OfficialCurriculum team · Florida · Grades K–2Math
Dot plate quick look (Pre-K): Flash a dot plate, hide it fast, say how many

What it is: a short number sense game where you flash a paper plate with 1 to 5 dots for two seconds and students say how many without counting one by one. Seeing small amounts at a glance is called subitizing, and it is a building block for adding later.

Time: about 10 minutes. Grade: Pre-K (ages 4 to 5).

Materials: 6 to 10 paper plates, a thick marker or round stickers. Make plates with 1 to 5 dots in different arrangements: a line, a dice pattern, a scattered group.

  1. Show a plate with 2 dots and keep it up. Ask: "How many? How do you know?"
  2. Now play fast: hold up a plate for two seconds, then hide it behind your back.
  3. Students show the number with their fingers first, then say it together.
  4. Show the plate again and ask one student how they saw it: "I saw 2 and 1."
  5. Repeat with 6 to 8 plates. Show the same amount in two different arrangements to start a talk: "Are these the same?"
  6. End with students making their own dot pattern for 3 on a plate.

Differentiation: start with 1 to 3 dots for students who need it. Students who are ready get plates with 6 dots in two groups of 3. English learners can answer with fingers only.

Quick check: flash three plates to each student at choice time. Note who says the amount for 3 and 4 without counting.
