Elapsed time field day schedule: a 30-minute 3rd grade math activity
What it is: a 3rd grade elapsed time activity where students plan a field day schedule: each event has a length, and students figure out start and end times on an open number line. A real plan gives every answer a purpose.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 3rd grade.
Materials: a list of 6 field day events with lengths (sack race 20 minutes, water break 10 minutes, relay 25 minutes), a blank schedule starting at 9:00, and open number line paper.
- Model: "The sack race starts at 9:00 and lasts 20 minutes." Jump on an open number line from 9:00 to 9:20.
- Do a harder one together: a 25-minute relay from 9:45. Jump to 10:00 first, then 10 more minutes.
- Pairs build the full schedule, writing start and end times for each event.
- Add a rule: lunch must start at 11:30. Pairs check whether their plan fits and adjust it.
- Two pairs compare schedules and check each other's times.
Differentiation: students who need support use events that are 15, 30 or 60 minutes long. Students who are ready work backward: "The day ends at 12:00; when must the last event start?" English learners can use the words start, end, lasts and minutes.
Quick check: ask a student how long it is from 10:40 to 11:15 and to show the jumps on a number line.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
