Even or odd partner line-up: a 15-minute 2nd grade math activity
What it is: a 2nd grade math activity where small groups of students try to pair up. If everyone has a partner, the number is even; if one student is left over, it is odd. Students then use the same idea with counters and numbers up to 20.
Time: about 15 minutes. Grade: 2nd grade.
Materials: open space, counters, and number cards from 1 to 20.
- Call 6 students to the front. Ask them to make pairs. Ask: "Is anyone left over?" Write 6: even.
- Call 7 students and do the same. Write 7: odd.
- Repeat with 4 or 5 more group sizes, recording each one.
- Pairs draw number cards and build each number with counters in two rows to test it.
- Look at the list together. Ask: "What do you notice about the last digit of the even numbers?"
Differentiation: students who need support test numbers up to 10. Students who are ready test what happens when you add two odd numbers. English learners can use the words pair, left over, even and odd.
Quick check: give a student 15 counters and ask them to show whether 15 is even or odd.
