Fitness dice brain break: a 10-minute 2nd grade movement game
What it is: a 10-minute brain break for 2nd grade where students roll two dice: one shows a movement and the other shows how many times to do it. Students move, count aloud and get back to work ready to focus.
Time: about 10 minutes. Grade: 2nd grade.
Materials: two large dice or two cubes made from boxes: one with numbers (5 to 10), one with 6 movements (jumping jacks, arm circles, squats, toe touches, march in place, reach high and low).
- Show both dice. Model one roll: "Squats, 6 times." Everyone counts while doing them.
- A student rolls both dice. The class reads the move and the number together.
- Everyone does the move while counting aloud, by ones or by twos.
- Roll 5 or 6 times, with a new roller each time.
- End with a slow stretch and 3 deep breaths before going back to work.
Safety: clear space around each student, and offer a seated version of every move.
Differentiation: students who need support follow a partner. Students who are ready add both dice and do the total. Students who use a wheelchair can do the arm version of each move.
Quick check: roll the number die and ask a student to say a skip count that matches it, such as counting by 2s to 8.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
