Fractions on a clothesline number line: a 3rd grade math activity
What it is: a 3rd grade fractions activity where the class hangs fraction cards on a string stretched across the room to build a number line from 0 to 1. Students reason about where halves, thirds, fourths and sixths go, and see that fractions are numbers with a place on the line.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 3rd grade.
Materials: a long piece of string tied across the room at a safe height, clothespins, cards for 0 and 1, and fraction cards (1/2, 1/3, 2/3, 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 1/6, 5/6, 1/8).
- Hang 0 and 1 at the ends. Give a student 1/2 and ask: "Where does it go? How do you know?"
- Give other students fraction cards. One at a time, they hang their card and explain.
- When 2/4 arrives, ask: "Where should it go if 1/2 is already there?" Talk about equivalent fractions.
- Students who disagree can move a card if they explain why.
- Students draw the finished line in their notebooks, marking at least 6 fractions.
Safety: hang the line at shoulder height, away from doors, and take it down after the lesson.
Differentiation: students who need support place only halves and fourths, using a paper strip folded into parts as a guide. Students who are ready add fractions greater than 1, such as 5/4. English learners can use the words between, closer to and equal to.
Quick check: hand a student 3/8 and ask where it goes compared with 1/2.
