Goal ladders: a 25-minute 3rd grade goal-setting activity
What it is: a 3rd grade goal-setting activity where students choose one goal they can reach in a month, such as learning the 7s times table or reading a chapter book, and break it into small steps on a paper ladder. Students learn that big goals are reached step by step.
Time: about 25 minutes. Grade: 3rd grade.
Materials: a paper ladder with 4 rungs per student, a goal at the top, and a weekly check-in sheet.
- Share a goal of your own and the steps on your ladder.
- Students brainstorm goals and pick one that is specific and can be done in a month.
- They write 4 steps, one per rung, starting with the easiest at the bottom.
- Partners check: "Is each step something you can actually do this week?"
- Every Friday, students color a rung if they finished that step and write one sentence about how it went.
Differentiation: students who need support get goal ideas to choose from and 3 rungs. Students who are ready add who can help them with each step. English learners can use the frames "My goal is ___" and "First, I will ___."
Quick check: ask a student to read their first step and tell you when they will do it.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
