Hundred chart puzzles: a 20-minute 1st grade place value activity

@UpOnlyLearningUpOnly OfficialCurriculum team · Florida · Grades K–2Math
Hundred chart puzzles (Grade 1): Cut the chart apart, rebuild it, spot the patterns

What it is: a 1st grade math activity where students put a hundred chart back together after it has been cut into puzzle pieces. To fit the pieces, they use patterns: down a column the tens go up by one, across a row the ones go up by one.

Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: 1st grade.

Materials: hundred charts printed on card stock and cut by an adult into 6 to 8 chunky pieces, one set per pair, kept in envelopes.

  1. Show a whole hundred chart. Ask: "What changes when you move one step right? One step down?"
  2. Hand out the envelopes. Pairs put the puzzle together, starting with the piece that has 1.
  3. Ask pairs to explain how they knew where a piece goes: "This one has 45, so 55 must be right below."
  4. Cover a few numbers on the finished chart with sticky notes. Partners say the hidden numbers.
  5. Swap envelopes and try another puzzle.

Safety: an adult cuts the charts before class.

Differentiation: students who need support work with a 1 to 50 chart in 4 pieces. Students who are ready get a chart with only a few numbers printed on each piece. English learners can use the words row, column, more and less.

Quick check: point to 36 and ask a student which number is above it and which is below it.

Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
