Line symmetry art: a 25-minute 4th grade geometry activity
What it is: a 4th grade geometry and art activity where students fold paper, paint on one half, press it closed, and get a design with a line of symmetry. Then they find lines of symmetry in letters, shapes and nature.
Time: about 25 minutes. Grade: 4th grade.
Materials: paper, washable paint, brushes, a few mirrors if you have them, and pictures of symmetric things (a butterfly, a leaf, a snowflake, letters).
- Show a butterfly picture. Ask: "If you folded it on this line, would the halves match?" Name the line of symmetry.
- Students fold paper in half, open it, paint a design on one side near the fold, and press the halves together.
- While the paint dries, groups test capital letters and shapes: how many lines of symmetry does each have?
- Use mirrors on a drawing to check whether a line is a line of symmetry.
- Students mark the line of symmetry on their dry art and write one sentence explaining it.
Safety: use washable paint, cover tables, and wash hands after painting.
Differentiation: students who need support test 5 letters with a mirror. Students who are ready find shapes with 2 or more lines of symmetry and a regular hexagon with 6. English learners can use the frame "This shape has ___ lines of symmetry."
Quick check: draw a heart and a capital S and ask a student which has a line of symmetry and where it is.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
