Nature table ideas: a weekly earth science tray for K–2
What it is: a printable-free routine where you set one earth object on a tray each week with a hand lens and a question card. Students visit the tray during free time, draw what they notice, and on Friday the class adds one new science word to the wall.
Time: 10 minutes a day, one object a week. Grade: K–2.
Materials: a tray, a hand lens, a card that says "I notice ... I wonder ...", a small notebook, and one object per week. An eight-week list: a rock with stripes, a cup of beach sand, a piece of pumice, a smooth river stone, a lump of clay soil, a fossil shell (inexpensive ones are sold in rock shops), an ice cube in a dish, a chunk of granite.
- On Monday, set out the object without naming it. Read the card together.
- During the week, students visit in twos, look with the hand lens, and draw or dictate one notice and one wonder in the notebook.
- On Friday, take five minutes: read a few notices and wonders aloud.
- Name the object and share one fact. For pumice: it forms from lava full of gas bubbles, which is why it has so many holes.
- Add one word to the word wall (stripe, grain, pumice, fossil, melt).
- Rotate to the next object on Monday. Keep the notebook as a record of the year.
Safety: choose objects too big to swallow, skip anything sharp, supervise the ice dish, and have students wash hands after touching soil or sand.
Differentiation: students who need support draw only. Students who are ready compare this week's object with last week's. English learners can add the new word in their home language too.
Quick check: on Friday, ask one student to read their wonder and another to suggest how the class could find out.
Educators, what earth object got your students talking the most? Share your best tray find in the replies.
