Paper plate clock: telling time to the hour and half hour in 1st grade
What it is: a 1st grade math activity where students make a clock from a paper plate and use it to show and read times to the hour and half hour. Building the clock helps students see why the hands point where they do.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 1st grade.
Materials: a paper plate per student, two paper hands (a short one and a long one) cut ahead of time, a paper fastener, a marker, and a list of daily-schedule times.
- Students write 12, 3, 6 and 9 first, then fill in the other numbers.
- An adult pushes the paper fastener through the center and the two hands.
- Show 3:00. Ask: "Where is the short hand? Where is the long hand?"
- Show half past: move the long hand to 6 and the short hand halfway between two numbers. Talk about why it moves.
- Read class schedule times aloud (lunch at 11:30, home at 3:00). Students show each one and check with a partner.
Safety: an adult cuts the hands and inserts the paper fasteners, and keeps the fasteners in a closed container.
Differentiation: students who need support work only on the hour. Students who are ready write the time in digital form under each clock they show. English learners can use the phrases "o'clock" and "half past."
Quick check: show 7:30 on your clock and ask a student to say the time and explain where the short hand is.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
