Rocket countdown: a 10-minute pre-K counting backward game
What it is: a movement game that teaches counting backward from 10 to 0. Students crouch like rockets, rise a little with each number and jump at zero.
Time: about 10 minutes. Grade: Pre-K (ages 4 to 5).
Materials: a number line from 10 to 0 on the board or a strip of paper, and open floor space.
- Point to 10 on the number line and read it back to 0 together, slowly.
- Students crouch low with hands together over their heads, like the tip of a rocket.
- Count down from 10. With each number, students rise a little bit higher.
- At zero, everyone says "blast off" and jumps up, then lands softly with bent knees.
- Play again and let a student be the countdown leader who points to the numbers.
- Make it harder: stop at a number and ask, "What comes next when we count back?"
Safety: spread out an arm's length apart and land on both feet.
Differentiation: start from 5 for students who need it. Students who are ready count back from 20. Students who use a wheelchair or prefer to sit can raise their arms higher with each number.
Quick check: say "7, 6, ..." and ask one student to keep going to zero on their own.
