Rounding roller coaster: a 20-minute 3rd grade place value game

@UpOnlyLearningUpOnly OfficialCurriculum team · Florida · Grades 3–5Math
Rounding roller coaster (Grade 3): Draw the hill, place your number, roll to the nearest ten

What it is: a 3rd grade place value game where students place numbers on a roller coaster hill drawn from one ten to the next. Numbers past the top (5 and up) roll forward to the higher ten, and numbers before the top roll back. It makes rounding to the nearest 10 and 100 visual.

Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: 3rd grade.

Materials: a roller coaster hill drawn on the board with 30 at the start, 35 at the top and 40 at the end, number cards, and small paper roller coaster cars.

  1. Show the hill from 30 to 40. Place a car at 33. Ask: "Which way will it roll?" It rolls back to 30.
  2. Place a car at 37. It rolls forward to 40. Ask: "What about 35?" Agree on the rule: 5 rolls forward.
  3. Pairs draw number cards, sketch a hill for the right tens and decide where each car rolls.
  4. Move to hundreds: draw a hill from 200 to 300 with 250 at the top. Try 238 and 271.
  5. Finish with a real use: "About how many students are in our school?"

Differentiation: students who need support round 2-digit numbers to the nearest 10 with a printed hill. Students who are ready round 3-digit numbers to both 10 and 100 and compare. English learners can use the frame "___ rounds to ___ because..."

Quick check: say 462 and ask a student to round it to the nearest ten and the nearest hundred.
