Spanish action verbs charades: a 20-minute 4th grade game
What it is: a 4th grade Spanish game where students learn 12 everyday action verbs (correr, saltar, nadar, comer, dormir, leer, escribir, cantar, bailar, cocinar, jugar, dibujar) and play charades, guessing each verb in Spanish with a full sentence.
Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: 4th grade.
Materials: verb cards with a picture and the Spanish word, and a timer.
- Show each verb card, say it and act it out. Students repeat the word and the action.
- Teach the guess sentence: "¿Estás corriendo?" (are you running?) and the answers "Sí" or "No."
- Teams take turns: one student draws a card and acts it out; the team has 30 seconds to guess with the sentence.
- Play 2 rounds. The second round, the actor can only use their hands.
- End with students writing 3 sentences: "Me gusta ___" with three verbs.
Differentiation: students who need support guess with just the verb. Students who are ready describe a classmate: "Ella está bailando." Students who already speak Spanish can be the judges.
Quick check: act out a verb and ask a student to name it in Spanish.
