Spanish restaurant role-play: a 30-minute 5th grade speaking activity
What it is: a 5th grade Spanish speaking activity where students run a pretend restaurant: one student is the server and two are customers. They greet, order from a Spanish menu, ask questions and request the bill, using polite phrases.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 5th grade.
Materials: a simple menu in Spanish with prices (sopa, ensalada, pollo con arroz, tacos, agua, jugo, flan), order pads, and a phrase card (Buenas tardes, ¿Qué desea?, Quisiera..., ¿Cuánto cuesta...?, La cuenta, por favor, Gracias).
- Read the menu together and practice each food word.
- Model the conversation with two students, from greeting to paying.
- Groups of 3 practice the role-play using the phrase card, then switch roles.
- Add a challenge: the restaurant is out of one dish, so the server must say "Lo siento, no hay ___" and suggest another.
- Two groups perform for the class, and listeners note one polite phrase they heard.
Differentiation: students who need support play the customer with a phrase card. Students who are ready add a question about ingredients: "¿Tiene carne?" Students who already speak Spanish can be the server and model natural pace.
Quick check: act as the server, ask "¿Qué desea?" and listen for a full order with a polite phrase.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
