Spanish classroom objects scavenger hunt: a 20-minute 3rd grade activity
What it is: a 3rd grade Spanish activity where students learn 10 classroom object words, then hunt for them around the room with a partner, asking and answering "¿Dónde está...?" (where is...?) as they go.
Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: 3rd grade.
Materials: a hunt list with 10 words and their articles (el lápiz, la mochila, el libro, la silla, la mesa, la puerta, la ventana, el reloj, la tijera, el cuaderno), sticky notes, and pencils.
- Hold up or point to each object and say the word with its article twice. Students repeat.
- Teach the question and answer: "¿Dónde está el reloj?" "Está aquí" or "Está allí."
- Pairs take the list. One asks "¿Dónde está...?" and the other walks to the object, touches it and answers.
- Pairs stick a note with the Spanish word on each object they find.
- Do a final round: you point, and the class says the word in Spanish.
Differentiation: students who need support work with 5 words with pictures. Students who are ready add a color: "el lápiz amarillo." Students who already speak Spanish can be the question askers.
Quick check: point to 3 objects and ask a student to name each one in Spanish with its article.
