The power of yet: a 15-minute 1st grade growth mindset activity
What it is: a 1st grade growth mindset activity where students turn "I can't" into "I can't do it yet" and add one small step they can try next. Students learn that skills grow with practice and mistakes are part of learning.
Time: about 15 minutes. Grade: 1st grade.
Materials: a sentence strip that says "yet" in big letters, chart paper, and a sticky note per student.
- Share a true story of something you couldn't do at first, such as riding a bike, and how practice helped.
- Write "I can't tie my shoes." Add the yet strip: "I can't tie my shoes yet." Ask: "How does that change it?"
- Students write or draw one thing they can't do yet on a sticky note.
- Under it, they add one next step: "I can practice with my brother."
- Put the notes on a "Yet" wall. Move a note to a "Now I can" side when a student learns that skill.
Differentiation: students who need support draw their "yet" and say the step. Students who are ready write two steps. English learners can use the frames "I can't ___ yet" and "I will ___."
Quick check: say "I can't read this word" and ask a student to change the sentence and add a next step.
