Time bingo to the nearest 5 minutes: a 2nd grade math game
What it is: a 2nd grade bingo game where you show analog clocks and students find the matching digital time on their cards. It practices telling time to the nearest 5 minutes and counting by 5s around the clock.
Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: 2nd grade.
Materials: bingo cards with 9 digital times each (several versions), a demonstration clock or clock pictures, and markers for the cards.
- Count by 5s around the clock together, pointing to each number: 5, 10, 15 ... 60.
- Show 4:25 on the clock. Ask: "Where is the hour hand? How many minutes?" Model reading it.
- Play bingo: show a clock, students read it silently and mark the time if they have it.
- After each round, a student explains how they read the minutes.
- The first student with three in a row reads all three times aloud to win.
Differentiation: students who need support play with times to the hour and half hour, and a strip that shows 5-minute counts. Students who are ready read times like "quarter past" and "quarter to" too. English learners can say the time in numbers: "four twenty-five."
Quick check: show 8:50 and ask a student to read it and explain why the hour hand is almost at 9.
