What moves a credit score? An 8th grade habit sort activity
What it is: an 8th grade life skills activity where students sort habit cards by whether they would likely help or hurt a credit score, then match each card to what scores usually look at: bill-paying history, how much is still owed, how much available credit is used and new applications for credit. Students learn that most scores range from 300 to 850 and that a score predicts how someone will handle credit.
Time: about 35 minutes. Grade: 8th grade.
Materials: 16 to 20 habit cards you write (paid a phone bill 2 weeks late; used $900 of a $1,000 card limit; paid every bill on time for 2 years; opened 4 new cards in one month; paid off a car loan; missed a student loan payment) and a sorting mat with Help and Hurt rows and 4 factor columns.
- Ask: "How does a lender decide whether to lend you money?" Introduce the credit report and the credit score.
- Groups sort the habit cards into Help or Hurt.
- Introduce the 4 factors and have groups move each card under one factor.
- Discuss the hardest cards: is using 90 percent of a card limit a problem even if the bill is paid on time?
- Share that anyone with a credit report can see it free at AnnualCreditReport.com, the official site the CFPB points to.
- Each student writes 3 habits they want to have as a first-time borrower.
Safety: use only made-up people on the cards. No one shares real family credit information.
Differentiation: students who need support sort 8 cards. Students who are ready explain why most students their age do not have a credit report yet. English learners can use the words bill, debt, limit and on time.
Quick check: ask a student which factor a late payment affects.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
