World geography passport: a free country-research activity for grades 3–5
What it is: students make a paper "passport" and fill one page for each country they "visit" using the free world geography pages. The pages have a clickable world map, the continents and the five oceans, and a section for every country with its capital, neighbors, languages, a greeting you can listen to, and notes on food, holidays and landmarks. No account needed.
Who it's for: grades 3–5, in class, at home or in a co-op. It also works as a weekly routine all year.
Time: 30 minutes for the first country, then 15 minutes for each one after.
Materials: two sheets of paper folded in half and stapled into a small booklet, a pencil, colored pencils, and a device to open the link.
- Students decorate the cover with "My Passport" and the year. No real photos or personal details needed; a drawn self-portrait or a symbol is fine.
- Pick a country together. Find it on the map and name its continent.
- On one passport page, students record: the capital, two neighboring countries, one language spoken, one greeting (after listening to it), and one food or celebration.
- Students draw a small "stamp" for the country, using a landmark or symbol they read about.
- Close by having everyone say the greeting out loud together.
Ideas to keep it going: let each student choose the next country, visit one country per continent before repeating a continent, or link countries to stories or news you are reading.
What to change next time: for advanced students, add a "compare" line: one way this country is like your own and one way it's different. For students who need support, pre-fill the headings on each passport page and let them copy one word answers. Families with roots in other countries can be invited to share a greeting or a dish, if they want to.
