Beanbag balance challenge: a 20-minute 2nd grade PE activity

Beanbag balance challenge (Grade 2): Beanbag on your head, walk tall and slow, try a new body part

What it is: a 2nd grade PE activity where students balance a beanbag on different body parts while walking, turning and changing level. Keeping the beanbag still teaches posture, slow controlled movement and body awareness.

Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: 2nd grade (grades K–2).

Materials: one beanbag per student (or a folded washcloth, or a small cloth bag of dry rice tied tightly closed), and a path marked with tape or cones.

  1. Start standing still: balance the beanbag on your head, then on one shoulder, then on the back of one hand. Hold each for 5 seconds.
  2. Walk the path with the beanbag on your head. Cue: "Tall back, eyes forward, soft steps."
  3. Change the walk: side steps, tiptoe steps, and slow backward steps with a partner watching.
  4. Change level: lower into a squat and stand back up without dropping it.
  5. Try new body parts on the path: an elbow, a flat palm held out, a foot lifted for 3 seconds.
  6. Partner challenge: walk side by side, each with a beanbag, and reach the end together.
  7. Cool down: lie down with the beanbag on your belly and watch it rise and fall with 5 breaths.

Safety: walk only, never run with a beanbag on the head; backward steps are slow, on a clear path, with a partner watching; keep rice bags closed and away from younger siblings. Every session: warm up first, clear the space, keep water nearby, and stop if anything hurts or a student feels dizzy or unwell.

Differentiation: students who need support can balance the beanbag on a hand or forearm, or work seated, moving the beanbag from knee to shoulder. Students who are ready can step over a low line or turn in a full circle. English learners can name each body part as they use it.

Quick check: ask a student to walk 5 steps and squat once with the beanbag on the head, then say one tip that helped.
