Mail carrier moves: a 15-minute gross motor game for preschoolers
What it is: a preschool gross motor game where students are mail carriers. Each "letter" is a card with a color and a picture of a way to move. Students pick up a letter, travel to the house of the same color in the way the card shows, and post it, then run back for the next one.
Time: about 15 minutes. Grade: Pre-K (ages 4 to 5).
Materials: 4 boxes, baskets or paper bags as houses, each marked with a big colored shape (red, blue, yellow, green); about 20 cards, each with one of those colors and a simple picture of a move (hop, tiptoe, march, crawl, gallop); a bag for the mail; open space.
- Set the 4 houses around the room, spread far apart. Put the mailbag in the middle.
- Show the moves on the cards and try each one together for a few seconds: hop, tiptoe, march, crawl, gallop.
- Each student takes one letter from the bag, says its color and its move, and travels to the matching house that way.
- They post the letter in the house and walk back to the bag for the next one.
- When the bag is empty, open each house together and check that every letter matches its color.
- Play again with a twist: carry the letter on your head, or deliver it with a partner, side by side.
- Cool down: the tired mail carriers sit down, rub their legs and take three slow breaths.
Safety: spread the houses out so travel paths do not cross; crawling happens on carpet or a mat; students walk back to the bag, not run, so no one collides in the middle. Every session: warm up first, clear the space, keep water nearby, and stop if anything hurts or a student feels dizzy or unwell.
Differentiation: students who need support can use cards with color only and walk every delivery, or deliver with an adult. Students who are ready can read a two-step card, such as hop then crawl. English learners can say the color and the move in English and in their home language.
Quick check: hand a student a card and watch whether they choose the right house and the right way to move.
