Bubble pop: a 15-minute outdoor movement game for preschoolers
What it is: an outdoor preschool movement game where an adult blows bubbles and students chase and pop them with the body part you call out: hands, elbows, knees, a foot or one fingertip. Students run, reach, jump and stop, and practice naming body parts.
Time: about 15 minutes. Grade: Pre-K (ages 4 to 5).
Materials: bubble solution and a wand (store-bought, or water with a little dish soap mixed by an adult), and a grassy or open outdoor area with clear edges.
- Set a play area with clear edges, such as between two trees or inside a big chalk circle.
- Name a body part: "Pop them with your elbows." Blow a stream of bubbles, some low and some high, so students reach and jump.
- When the bubbles are gone, everyone freezes like a statue. Then call a new body part.
- Add a way to travel between rounds: "Hop to the bubbles" or "tiptoe to the bubbles."
- For the last round, blow just a few bubbles and ask students to pop them gently with one finger, moving slowly.
- Cool down: students lie on their backs, pretend to float like a bubble and take three slow breaths.
Safety: play on grass or another outdoor surface, because soap makes smooth floors slippery; an adult holds the bottle and keeps solution away from eyes and mouths; remind students to watch where they run so no one bumps heads. Every session: warm up first, clear the space, keep water nearby, and stop if anything hurts or a student feels dizzy or unwell.
Differentiation: students who need support can pop bubbles while seated or standing in one spot, with the adult blowing bubbles toward them. Students who are ready can pop a bubble during a jump or with the hand on the other side. English learners can say each body part as they pop.
Quick check: call three body parts in a row (knee, elbow, foot) and watch whether each student pops a bubble with the right one.
