Hoop islands: a 20-minute cooperative PE game for 1st grade

1. Spread the hoops out. Explain the goal: everyone has at least one foot in a hoop when the music stops.
2. Play music and call a way to travel: skip, gallop, walk backward carefully, hop.
3. Stop the music. Students find an island and count how many people share each one.
4. Remove one or two hoops each round. Ask: "How can we make room for everyone?" Students may share, put just one foot in, or hold hands for balance.
5. When only 2 or 3 hoops are left, celebrate the class for fitting together safely.
6. Talk it over: "What did you say or do to help someone else fit?"

Safety: use flat hoops or tape circles that do not slide; no pushing or lifting other students; students hold hands only to help with balance. Every session: warm up first, clear the space, keep water nearby, and stop if anything hurts or a student feels dizzy or unwell.

Differentiation: students who need support can travel at a walk and choose a hoop close to them. Students who are ready can lead the movement calls. English learners can practice the words room, share and together.

Quick check: ask students to name one kind thing someone did to make room in the last round.
