Scarf juggling for beginners: a 20-minute kindergarten PE activity

Scarf juggling for beginners (Kindergarten): Toss and catch one, toss, toss, catch, catch, pass to a partner

What it is: a kindergarten PE activity that starts scarf juggling. A lightweight scarf floats down slowly, so students have time to track it and reach, and they build up from one scarf to a two-scarf pattern. It trains eye tracking, timing and using both hands, which they will need to catch a ball later.

Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: kindergarten (grades K–2).

Materials: one lightweight scarf per student (chiffon scarves, or squares of tissue paper or thin fabric about 20 inches across), and open space.

  1. Teach the toss: hold the scarf in the middle like a flower, lift it straight up past your face and let go at the top. Eyes follow the scarf.
  2. Toss and catch with two hands 10 times. Say "up, look, catch" together.
  3. Toss and catch with the right hand only, then the left hand only, 5 times each.
  4. Add a trick before the catch: one clap, touch your knees, or turn around once.
  5. Two scarves: hold one in each hand. Toss the right one up, then the left one, and catch them in the same order: toss, toss, catch, catch.
  6. Partner pass: face a partner a few steps apart and toss the scarf across for them to catch.
  7. Cool down: drape the scarf over your shoulders and roll the shoulders slowly forward and back.

Safety: spread out so students can look up without bumping into anyone; students check the space around them before turning. Every session: warm up first, clear the space, keep water nearby, and stop if anything hurts or a student feels dizzy or unwell.

Differentiation: students who need support can toss from a seated position or trap the scarf against their body. Students who are ready can try three scarves with an adult showing the pattern. English learners can say "up" and "catch" with each toss.

Quick check: ask a student to show toss, toss, catch, catch with two scarves and say the words as they go.
