Classroom jobs with paychecks: a weekly 2nd grade money routine

Classroom jobs with pay (Grade 2): Apply for a job, do it all week, get paid on Friday

What it is: a weekly routine for 2nd grade where each student holds a classroom job, earns a pretend paycheck on Friday and decides whether to spend it on a small privilege now or save it for a bigger one. It turns "people earn money by working" into something students live every week.

Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: 2nd grade.

Materials: a job chart with 8 to 12 jobs (line leader, plant waterer, class librarian, messenger, board cleaner and so on), a simple pretend paycheck slip, paper class dollars, and a privilege menu (sit at the teacher's desk for a lesson: 5 class dollars; choose the read-aloud: 10; lunch with the teacher: 20).

  1. In week 1, show the jobs and have students fill out a one-line application: "I want to be ___ because I am good at ___."
  2. Assign the jobs and post the chart. Every job pays the same 5 class dollars a week, so the focus is on the work, not on which job pays more.
  3. On Friday, hand out paychecks. Students write their name, their job and the amount.
  4. Students choose: spend now from the privilege menu, or save in an envelope for a bigger privilege.
  5. Every 2 weeks, rotate jobs so everyone tries new work.
  6. Once a month, ask: "Who saved for something bigger? How did you decide?"

Differentiation: use a picture job chart for students who are still learning to read. Students who are ready keep a running balance on their envelope. English learners can learn the job names with picture cards first.

Quick check: ask a student how they earned their pay this week and what they plan to do with it.

Do you run a classroom economy? Tell us your best privilege for the menu and how you keep it simple to manage.
