Counting in Spanish hopscotch: a 15-minute kindergarten game
What it is: a kindergarten Spanish game where students hop through a hopscotch grid while counting from uno to diez out loud. Saying each number as they land on it ties the new word to a movement and a numeral.
Time: about 15 minutes. Grade: kindergarten.
Materials: a hopscotch grid with 1 to 10 drawn in chalk outside or made with tape inside, a beanbag, and a number chart with the Spanish words (uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez).
- Count from 1 to 10 in Spanish with the chart, slowly, twice. Students echo each word.
- Model the game: toss the beanbag on a number, hop through the grid and say each number in Spanish as you land.
- Students take turns. The line counts along with the hopper.
- When the hopper picks up the beanbag, they say the number it landed on: "siete."
- End with the class counting backward from diez to uno together.
Safety: hop on a dry, flat surface, and one student in the grid at a time.
Differentiation: students who need support count to cinco and walk instead of hop. Students who are ready count to veinte. Students who already speak Spanish can be the number coaches.
Quick check: point to three numbers on the grid and ask a student to say each one in Spanish.
