Spanish colors for preschool: a 10-minute color command game
What it is: a Spanish game for preschool where students learn four color words (rojo, azul, amarillo, verde) and move to touch something of that color when they hear it. Students learn new words through movement, not translation.
Time: about 10 minutes. Grade: Pre-K (ages 4 to 5).
Materials: four large paper squares in red, blue, yellow and green taped to the walls, and the words written under each square.
- Point to each square and say the word clearly twice: "rojo, rojo." Students echo.
- Play "show me": say "azul" and students point to the blue square.
- Now add movement: "Corre a rojo" (run to red). Model walking quickly first.
- Add a body color: "Toca algo verde" (touch something green) on your clothes or around you.
- Let a student give a command in Spanish while everyone follows.
- End with a color song or a chant: "rojo, azul, amarillo, verde."
Safety: walk, do not run, if the room is small, and keep the paths to the squares clear.
Differentiation: students who need support can hold a partner's hand and go together. Students who are ready can learn morado and naranja. Students who already speak Spanish can be the leaders.
Quick check: hold up a crayon and ask a student to say the color in Spanish.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
