Spanish food vocabulary picnic: a 20-minute 2nd grade role-play
What it is: a 2nd grade Spanish role-play where students learn 8 food words, pack a pretend picnic basket, and offer food to classmates with "¿Quieres...?" (do you want...?) and answer "Sí, por favor" or "No, gracias."
Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: 2nd grade.
Materials: picture cards of 8 foods (la manzana, el pan, el queso, el agua, la leche, el plátano, el sándwich, la galleta), a basket or bag per group, and a picnic blanket or towel.
- Show each card and say the word twice with its article. Students repeat and point.
- Play "what's missing": hide one card and students say which food is gone.
- Teach the question and answers with gestures: "¿Quieres pan?" "Sí, por favor." "No, gracias."
- Groups pack their basket with 4 cards and sit on the blanket. They take turns offering food.
- End with each student saying what they want: "Quiero la manzana."
Differentiation: students who need support answer only with "sí" or "no" and point. Students who are ready add "Me gusta" (I like). Students who already speak Spanish can lead each group.
Quick check: hold up two cards and ask a student "¿Quieres el pan o el queso?" Listen for a full answer.
