Spanish greetings for kids: a 15-minute 1st grade role-play
What it is: a 1st grade Spanish activity where students learn a short greeting conversation and practice it in pairs as they walk and meet classmates. Students learn hola, ¿cómo estás?, bien, más o menos, mal, and adiós.
Time: about 15 minutes. Grade: 1st grade.
Materials: picture cards for bien (thumbs up), más o menos (flat hand) and mal (thumbs down), and some music to start and stop the walking.
- Greet a student: "Hola. ¿Cómo estás?" Show the picture cards and model the answers with gestures.
- Practice as a class: you ask, everyone answers with a word and a gesture.
- Add "¿Y tú?" (and you?) so the conversation goes both ways, and close with "Adiós."
- Play music. Students walk; when it stops, they greet the nearest classmate in Spanish.
- Repeat 4 or 5 times, then ask a few pairs to show their conversation.
Differentiation: students who need support answer with the gesture and one word. Students who are ready add "Me llamo ___" (my name is). Students who already speak Spanish can model the conversation.
Quick check: say "Hola. ¿Cómo estás?" to a student and listen for a greeting, an answer and "¿Y tú?"
