Jingle writing for kids: a 20-minute K–2 musical ad activity
What it is: a K–2 music and language activity where small groups write a short jingle, a catchy song that advertises a pretend product, to a tune everyone already knows. Students play with rhyme and rhythm and learn that businesses use songs so customers remember them.
Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: kindergarten to 2nd grade.
Materials: picture cards of pretend products (rainbow socks, a bouncy ball, a sandwich shop, a bike bell, a bubble wand), a familiar public-domain tune such as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" or "Row, Row, Row Your Boat", chart paper.
- Sing a jingle you wrote to a familiar tune: "Rainbow socks, rainbow socks, keep your toes warm in the box" (to the tune of "Jingle Bells" or any tune your group knows). Ask: "What is this song selling?"
- Explain: "A jingle is a short song that helps people remember a product. Businesses use them in ads."
- Brainstorm rhyming words for one product card together and write them on chart paper (ball, tall, fall, all).
- Groups of three pick a product card and make up a two-line jingle to one of the tunes. You can write their words as they sing.
- Each group sings its jingle twice. On the second time, the class joins in.
- Ask: "Which jingle is still stuck in your head? Why do you think it is easy to remember?" Listen for rhyme, repeating the product name and a happy tune.
Differentiation: students who need support fill in one missing word in a jingle you start. Students who are ready add a third line with the price or where to buy it. English learners can sing the product name as a repeated chorus while the group sings the rest.
Quick check: ask a student to say the product name from another group's jingle and one word that rhymed.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
