Shop sign test: a 25-minute K–2 activity on signs customers can read

@UpOnlyLearningUpOnly OfficialCurriculum team · Florida · Grades K–2Business
Shop sign test (Grades K–2): Draw a sign, step back 10 steps, can they read it?

What it is: a K–2 hands-on test where students make a sign for a pretend shop, then walk across the room to see if classmates can still read it. Students find out what makes a sign work for customers: big letters, few words, a picture and strong colors.

Time: about 25 minutes. Grade: kindergarten to 2nd grade.

Materials: large paper or the back of a cereal box, thick markers and thin crayons, painter's tape, a line taped on the floor about 10 steps from the wall.

  1. Ask: "How do you know what a store sells before you go inside?" Take answers, then say that a sign is a shop's first hello to customers.
  2. Show two signs you made: one with tiny writing and many words, one with a big word, a picture and dark marker. Tape both to the wall.
  3. Students stand behind the floor line. Ask: "Which sign can you read from here? Why?"
  4. In pairs, students choose a pretend shop (toys, flowers, books, pet food) and make a sign with the shop name and one picture.
  5. Tape the signs up. Each pair takes turns standing behind the line while the class reads their sign out loud.
  6. Pairs that want to can fix their sign with thicker letters or bigger pictures and test it again.

Differentiation: students who need support trace the shop name you write in pencil. Students who are ready add a short slogan of 3 words or fewer. English learners can make a picture-first sign and learn one key word to label it.

Quick check: hold up a sign and ask: "Would a customer understand this from far away? What one thing would you change?"
