Toy repair shop role play: a service business activity for K–2
What it is: a role play where students run a pretend repair shop for paper toys with "problems" such as a missing wheel or a torn flag. Students learn the difference between selling a thing and selling a service, and practice the steps of serving a customer.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: kindergarten to 2nd grade.
Materials: paper toy cutouts with one problem each (a car with a missing wheel, a kite with no tail, a house with no door), spare paper parts, glue sticks or tape, repair tickets with three boxes: toy, problem, fixed.
- Ask: "When something breaks at home, who helps fix it?" Explain that some businesses sell things, and some businesses sell help. Helping is called a service.
- Show one broken paper toy. Model filling a ticket: draw the toy, draw the problem, leave the "fixed" box empty.
- Set up the shop with two jobs: front desk (writes the ticket and talks to the customer) and repair bench (fixes the toy with spare parts).
- Customers bring a broken toy to the desk and explain the problem in a full sentence: "My car is missing a wheel."
- The repair bench fixes the toy and checks the "fixed" box. The front desk hands it back and says: "Here is your car. Is it working for you?"
- Switch jobs. After two rounds, ask: "Did the shop give the customer a new thing or a service?"
Differentiation: students who need support repair toys with tape strips you have already cut. Students who are ready write a price for each repair on the ticket. English learners can use the word bank broken, missing, fix and ready with pictures.
Quick check: ask a student: "Is fixing a bike a good or a service? Is a new bike a good or a service?"
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
