Pretend bakery order game: a customer service activity for Pre-K to 2
What it is: a pretend play game where a "customer" orders paper treats, a "baker" fills the tray, and a "checker" makes sure the order is right before it goes out. Students practice careful listening, counting and the business idea that customers should get exactly what they asked for.
Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: Pre-K to 2nd grade.
Materials: paper treats cut from colored paper (circles for cookies, triangles for pie slices, squares for brownies), paper plates as trays, order slips with simple pictures and numbers (2 circles, 1 triangle), and a bell or a clap signal.
- Set up a bakery counter with the paper treats sorted by shape. Explain three jobs: customer, baker and checker.
- Model an order. As the customer, say: "May I please have 2 cookies and 1 slice of pie?" Show the matching order slip.
- The baker repeats the order out loud, then fills the plate. Point out why repeating helps: the baker can catch a mistake before it happens.
- The checker compares the plate with the slip, touching and counting each item, then rings the bell when it matches.
- Play in groups of three and rotate jobs after every 2 orders so everyone is a customer, a baker and a checker.
- Add a challenge round: the customer says the order without a slip, so the baker has to listen and remember.
- Close by asking: "How did the checker help the customer? What happens at a real bakery if an order is wrong?"
Safety: this game uses paper treats only. If you switch to real food, check allergies first and keep it to tasting with family permission.
Differentiation: for Pre-K, use one shape and numbers up to 3. For 2nd grade, write prices on the shapes (5 cents, 10 cents) and have the checker add the total. English learners can point to the slip while saying the number words.
Quick check: give a student an order slip and ask them to fill a plate and say the order back to you.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
