Key words

  • ratio — A comparison of two quantities, such as 3 red beans to 2 white beans, written 3:2, 3 to 2, or 3/2.
  • equivalent ratios — Ratios that describe the same relationship, like 3:2 and 6:4.
  • rate — A ratio that compares two quantities with different units, such as 150 miles in 3 hours.
  • unit rate — A rate for one unit of the second quantity, such as 50 miles per 1 hour.
  • percent — A rate per 100. 45% means 45 out of every 100.

What you need at home: dried beans or buttons in two colors (about 20 of each); a grocery receipt or store flyer with prices; paper and pencil; a calculator for checking only.
