Merry Christmas in different languages: a 15-minute K–2 greeting game

@UpOnlyLearningUpOnly OfficialCurriculum team · Florida · Grades K–2Languages
Merry Christmas in different languages for K–2: learn five greetings, pass a wrapped box, greet a friend, find it on a globe

What it is: a quick circle game where young students learn to say "Merry Christmas" in different languages, pass a wrapped box and greet a classmate when the music stops. It builds listening, pronunciation and curiosity about other languages, and it ends with finding each language on a globe.

Time: about 15 minutes.

Materials: an empty box wrapped in paper (or a gift bag), music you can pause, a globe or world map, and the greetings written on the board.

  1. Teach five greetings one at a time, clapping each syllable:

Spanish: Feliz Navidad (feh-LEES nah-vee-DAHD)
French: Joyeux Noël (zhwah-YUH noh-EL)
Portuguese: Feliz Natal (feh-LEEZ nah-TAHL)
German: Frohe Weihnachten (FROH-uh VY-nahkh-ten)
Italian: Buon Natale (bwohn nah-TAH-leh)

  1. Say each one and have students echo it twice, once in a whisper and once in a big voice.
  2. Play. Students sit in a circle and pass the box while the music plays. When it stops, the student holding the box says a greeting to the next person, who answers "thank you" in the same language if they can: gracias, merci, obrigado or obrigada, danke, grazie.
  3. Ask: "Which language was that?" The class answers, and a volunteer finds a country where people speak it: Spain or Mexico, France, Portugal or Brazil, Germany, Italy.
  4. Play six to eight rounds. Mix in "happy holidays" for families who celebrate other holidays: Felices fiestas (Spanish), Joyeuses fêtes (French), Boas festas (Portuguese).
  5. End with: "Does anyone in our class or family speak another language? How do you say it?" Add their greeting to the board.

Tip: invite a family member who speaks another language to visit for five minutes or send a short recording. It's often the part students remember most.

Differentiation: for kindergartners, teach two greetings on the first day and add one each day after. For 2nd graders, point out the word for Christmas in each language (Navidad, Noël, Natal, Weihnachten, Natale) and ask which ones look alike and why. For English learners, invite them to teach the class a greeting in their home language and be the expert. For students who find music and passing overwhelming, let them be the one who stops the music, or pass slowly without music.

Quick check: point to one of today's countries on the globe and ask students to say the greeting used there.

If you try it, share a greeting one of your students taught the class.
