How fast should a student type?

Rough ranges for ten-finger typing on a computer, not grades. Every student moves at their own pace, and accuracy comes first.

StageWhat to practiceSpeedAccuracy
Kindergarten to grade 2Finding letters, home row5 to 10 wpm80% and up
Grades 3 to 5All letters, capitals, short sentences10 to 20 wpm85% and up
Grades 6 to 8Numbers, punctuation, passages20 to 30 wpm90% and up

Thumb typing on a phone is usually slower for beginners, so the phone levels go from 5 to 60 wpm.

Typing practice questions

Is the typing game really free?
Yes. Every level is free, with no ads and no account. Progress is saved on this device, so a student can pick up where they left off.
What age is it for?
Students from about age 6 can start with the first home row keys. Older students and adults can skip ahead quickly and work on speed, up to the 150 wpm pro level.
Does it work on phones and tablets?
Yes. On a phone or tablet the page opens in the iPhone-style or Android-style mode and types with the device's own keyboard. The picture shows which key comes next. You can switch modes at any time with the buttons at the top.
How do I type accents, ñ and ç?
On a Spanish or Portuguese computer keyboard, accents use a dead key: press ´, let go, then press the vowel to get á. On a phone, press and hold a letter, then slide to the accented one. The Spanish and Portuguese pages teach this step by step.
Why does accuracy come before speed?
A student who types the right keys without looking gets faster with practice. That is why a level unlocks with good accuracy, and speed earns the extra stars.
