Choose Your Tools: Multi-Step Rational Number Problems

The student will solve multi-step real-world problems with positive and negative rational numbers given in different forms (whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percents), convert between forms to make the work easier, and use estimation to judge whether an answer is reasonable. · 40 min

Warm-up — say this

“Good problem solvers guess the size of the answer first. Then they do the exact work, and then they ask whether the two agree.”

Worked example

Maya earns $14.40 per hour. She works 3 1/2 hours on Saturday and 2.25 hours on Sunday. She spends 1/3 of her earnings on a gift. How much does she have left?

Answer: Total hours: 3.5 + 2.25 = 5.75. Earnings: 5.75 × 14.40 = $82.80. Spent on the gift: 82.80 ÷ 3 = $27.60. Left: 82.80 - 27.60 = $55.20. Check by estimate: 6 hours at $14 is $84, and two-thirds of that is $56, which is close.

A mistake students make

Take 10% off and then 5% off, and that is the same as 15% off.

How the book fixes it

The second percent applies to the smaller price. On $100, 10% off gives $90, and 5% off $90 is $85.50. A single 15% discount gives $85. Combined discounts take off a little less than the sum.

Note to the parent

Ask for the estimate before the answer, every time. A student who says about $7 first will notice right away if the exact answer comes out to $70.

That is one topic of many. The free questions above check a skill; this is the part that teaches it.

Questions parents ask

Are these math worksheets really free?

Yes. All 25 questions and their answers are on this page, free to print and free to photocopy for your own students. Printing needs only a free account. No card.

Can a teacher or a tutor use these with a class?

Yes. Print and photocopy them for the students you teach. The only thing we ask is that you do not republish them as your own or sell them.

Where are the answers?

Marked beside each question on this page, so it prints as its own answer key. For a clean copy, click Hide answers before you print; click Show answers again to print your answer key.

What grade are these for?

Grade 7. Every other grade from kindergarten to grade 8 has its own page, linked at the foot of this one. If your student finds these hard, try the grade below — that is normal and it is not a problem.

What do the paid workbooks add?

These questions check a skill. The workbook teaches it: a forty-minute lesson that tells you what to say, two worked examples, the two mistakes students actually make on that skill and how to correct each one, and an explanation beside every answer rather than a bare key.
