What is on the sheet

  • Path A: ten-frames and number lines
  • Path B: number facts
  • Path C: one- and two-step word problems
  • The paths are called A, B and C, never “low” or “high”
  • Aligned to CCSS 2.OA.B.2, “Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies”; Path C also touches 2.OA.A.1[1]. The Portuguese sheet is tagged BNCC EF02MA05[2].
  • A separate answer key page, and an ink-saver (black-and-white) copy

How to pick a path

Try a few items from Path B. If most are easy, move to Path C; if most are hard, use Path A. Every path practises the same skill.

Research behind the approach

  • Understood.org describes differentiated instruction as a teaching approach that tailors instruction to all students' learning needs[3], and Reading Rockets calls it a flexible and individual approach[4].
  • A 2019 systematic review found mostly small-to-moderate positive effects of differentiated instruction, and also severe knowledge gaps[5]. We offer levels as a convenience, not a guarantee.
  • The IES practice guide for students who struggle with math gives a “Strong” rating to using concrete and semi-concrete representations and to using the number line[6]. That is why Path A has ten-frames and number lines.
  • CAST's Universal Design for Learning guidelines include building fluency with graduated support for practice[7].

Questions

What is differentiated instruction?

It means adjusting teaching to students' different needs. Understood.org calls it a teaching approach that tailors instruction to all students' learning needs[3].

Does differentiation work?

Research is promising but still limited. A 2019 systematic review found mostly small-to-moderate positive effects, and also severe knowledge gaps[5]. We offer levels as a convenience for teachers and parents, not as a guarantee.

How do I pick a level?

Try a few items from Path B. If most are easy, move to C; if most are hard, use A. Every path practises the same skill.

Is there an answer key?

Yes, on its own page.

Which standard is it?

CCSS 2.OA.B.2[1]; in Brazil, BNCC EF02MA05[2].
