The Stories You Follow

Reading together, word by word Grades K–6

Read-along stories for kids, with audio

Press play and read along as each word lights up.

Open a picture book and press the ear. The device reads it aloud while each word lights up, and your student's hero hops from word to word like a bouncing ball. Slow it down to one word at a time, or speed it up to 200 words per minute.

Why it works: following the words while hearing them read is part of the fluency practice that helps word reading and comprehension. See the research

How it works

A speed for every reader

Choose from 5 to 200 words per minute with the slider or the − and + buttons, even in the middle of a page. The new speed starts with the next word.

For comparison, many students read about 100 words a minute aloud by the end of 2nd grade, and about 146 in 5th and 6th grade (Hasbrouck and Tindal, 2017).

Ways to read together

Free and members

Beach Day is free from the first page to The End, with every feature and no account. Members read along with every book, pick which student is reading, keep each student's place in the account and earn reward points for reading.

Questions from parents

Is The Stories You Follow free?
Yes. Beach Day is free from the first page to The End, with every feature: the voice, the speed control, the hopping hero and the word light. No account is needed. The other books are for members (a Monthly, Yearly or Lifetime membership), who also earn reward points for reading. The picture book pages keep their own free preview of every book.
How fast does it read?
You choose, from 5 to 200 words per minute, and you can change it while it reads. It starts at 100. Under 60, the voice reads one word at a time with a pause after each word, which helps new readers point to each word and say it. For comparison, many students read about 100 words a minute aloud by the end of 2nd grade, and about 146 in 5th and 6th grade (Hasbrouck and Tindal, 2017).
Which voice does it use, and does it work on phones?
It uses the voices built into your device, so there is nothing to install and nothing is recorded. Choose a voice from the list under the book. On an iPhone or iPad you can download more voices in Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content, Voices. On Android, search Settings for "text-to-speech" to pick an engine and download a language. If a device has no voice for the language, the words still light up at your speed, without sound. Some voices do not say which word they are on; then the light follows a close estimate.
What ages is it for?
Kindergarten to 6th grade. Younger students listen and watch the hero hop from word to word. Early readers follow along at a slow speed and tap a word to hear it again. Older students read along faster, or in a second language: every book is in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Can each student read with their own hero?
Yes. The hero is the one your student made in any UpOnly Learning game. Members choose which student is reading, and that student's hero hops along. A switch under the book changes the hero to a simple yellow dot.
