Letter match

Say: "Find the n pictures, the m pictures and the d pictures." Your learner colors the n pictures in one color, the m pictures in another and the d pictures in a third.

No supplies swap. No printer? Say a word and your learner says "n", "m" or "d".

Shape match

Say: "Name each shape. Then find a thing with the same shape." Your learner names the four shapes in the top row, then draws a line from each thing in the bottom row to its shape.

No supplies swap. No printer? Find one circle, square, triangle and rectangle in the room.

Healthy habits

Say: "What helps our body every day? Point and tell me." Your learner names each habit, tells when they do it and colors the pictures.

No supplies swap. No printer? Act out each habit and your learner guesses.

Draw a shape house

Say: "Draw a house with a square and a triangle roof. Add a rectangle door." Your learner draws a house from shapes in the frame. Count the shapes together.

No supplies swap. No printer? Make a shape house with spoons or blocks on the table.

Activity cards

Letter hop

10 minutes · You need: 3 sheets: N, M and D

  1. Put the 3 sheets on the floor.
  2. Say a sound or a letter name.
  3. Your learner hops onto the matching sheet.

Easier: Use 2 sheets.

Next step: Say the sounds of a short word, like m, o, p. Your learner says the word and hops to its first letter.

Say this: "Hop to the letter that says mmm."

No supplies: Point to the letter in the air instead of hopping.

Literacy: print and alphabet knowledge

Mystery shape bag

10 minutes · You need: A cloth bag or pillowcase, 4 blocks or kitchen things

  1. Your learner reaches into the bag without looking.
  2. They feel one thing and guess its shape: round, corners, long sides.
  3. Pull it out and check.

Easier: Use 2 things that are very different.

Next step: Your learner hides a thing for you to guess.

Say this: "I feel corners. I think it is a square."

No supplies: Close your eyes and trace a shape on your learner's hand.

Math: geometry

Healthy habits charades

5 minutes · You need: Nothing

  1. Act out a habit: washing hands, brushing teeth, sleeping or playing.
  2. Your learner guesses the habit.
  3. Take turns being the actor.

Easier: Act out 2 habits.

Next step: Ask "When do we do that?"

Say this: "Scrub, scrub, rinse. What am I doing?"

No supplies: Needs nothing.

Physical: health and safety

Shape walk

5 minutes · You need: A long piece of string or yarn

  1. Lay the string on the floor in a circle.
  2. Your learner walks around it, then you make a triangle and a square.
  3. Name each shape before walking it.

Easier: Walk only the circle.

Next step: Walk the shape backward or on tiptoes.

Say this: "Walk the triangle. One side, turn, two sides, turn."

No supplies: Walk a pretend shape and your learner guesses it.

Physical: gross motor

Song of the week: Healthy me

N and m and d I say,

Circle, square and triangle today.

Wash my hands and brush my teeth,

Sleep tight, a story, cozy sheets.

Actions: Draw each shape in the air as you sing it. Try next: Add a line about a food you tried.

Original UpOnly Learning words, say or sing it in any rhythm.

Parent notes for Friday

Not a test. Notice what your learner does this week, and practice the rest later. Nothing here is sent to UpOnly Learning.

  • Matches n, m and d words to their letter
  • Names a circle, square, triangle and rectangle
  • Tells two healthy habits
  • Draws a picture using shapes

Want the bigger picture? Use the free kindergarten readiness checklist.

Safety for this week

  • Use objects too big to fit in your learner's mouth, and stay close during any counting with real objects.
  • Child-size scissors only, with an adult watching. Hand scissors over handle first.
  • Choose crayons, markers and paint labeled for young learners (look for the AP seal).
  • Adults handle anything hot or sharp.

Questions parents ask

What should my student know after unit 3?

By the end of this unit many students can say the n, m and d sounds, name a circle, square, triangle and rectangle, and tell a few daily habits like washing hands. Every student grows at their own pace. Use the parent notes page to choose what to practice.

What are fun shape games for preschoolers?

Try a mystery bag where your student feels a shape without looking, a shape walk along string on the floor, and a shape house drawing. Moving and touching make shapes stick better than worksheets alone. Keep each game to about 10 minutes.

What if my student is not ready to move on?

Repeat any week as many times as you like. There is no test and no deadline. Use the parent notes page to pick one or two things to practice, and move on when your student seems comfortable. Unit 4 starts counting to 10.

What supplies do I need for week 12?

Paper, crayons, a cloth bag or pillowcase, 4 blocks or kitchen things of different shapes, and a long piece of string. Every activity also has a no-supplies swap, so you can start this review week with what you already have at home.
