Letter o

Say: "O says o, like on and off. Listen: fooox, froooog, clooock." Your learner traces the big O and the small o, then says each picture word slowly and listens for the o sound in the middle.

No supplies swap. No printer? Draw an o in the air, then on your learner's back with one finger.

Numbers 6 to 10

Say: "Five on top, then count on. How many dots?" Your learner counts the dots in each ten frame, touches the number above it and says it out loud.

No supplies swap. No printer? Hold up 6 to 10 fingers and your learner counts them.

Tools at home

Say: "What does each tool help us do?" Your learner names each tool, tells what it does and colors the pictures.

No supplies swap. No printer? Find 3 tools at home and say what each one does.

Ocean waves

Say: "Over and over, like ocean waves. Start at the green dot." Your learner traces each wavy line from left to right.

No supplies swap. No printer? Make waves with a piece of string.

Activity cards

Open wide

10 minutes · You need: Nothing

  1. Open your mouth wide and say "o, o, o" together.
  2. Say a word. If it has the o sound, your learner makes a big O with their arms.
  3. Try: on, sun, hop, cat, off, pot.

Easier: Use only on and sun.

Next step: Say the sounds h, o, p slowly. Your learner says the word: hop.

Say this: "Hop has o in the middle. Make an O."

No supplies: Needs nothing.

Literacy: phonological awareness

Sock ten frame

10 minutes · You need: A paper ten frame, 10 rolled pairs of socks

  1. Your learner fills the top row with 5 socks, counting each one.
  2. Keep going on the bottom row to make 6, 7 or 8.
  3. Ask "How many boxes are empty?"

Easier: Make 6 only.

Next step: You make a number; your learner says it without counting from 1.

Say this: "Five on top and two more. Seven."

No supplies: Use fingers: 5 on one hand, then count on.

Math: counting and cardinality

Tool hunt

10 minutes · You need: A flashlight, a key, a ruler

  1. Show each tool and ask "What does it do?"
  2. Use the flashlight in a dark closet, try the key in a door, measure a toy with the ruler.
  3. Adults keep sharp and hot tools out of reach.

Easier: Use only the flashlight.

Next step: Find another tool and guess what it does.

Say this: "The key helps us open the door."

No supplies: Talk about tools in a picture book.

Science: tools and how things work

On and off

5 minutes · You need: A pillow or folded towel

  1. Put the pillow on the floor.

Parent notes for Friday

Not a test. Notice what your learner does this week, and practice the rest later. Nothing here is sent to UpOnly Learning.

  • Says the short o sound
  • Finds o on a page
  • Reads the numbers 6 to 10
  • Tells what 3 tools do

Safety for this week

  • Use objects too big to fit in your learner's mouth, and stay close during any counting with real objects.
  • Child-size scissors only, with an adult watching. Hand scissors over handle first.
  • Choose crayons, markers and paint labeled for young learners (look for the AP seal).
  • Adults handle anything hot or sharp.

Questions parents ask

How do ten frames help with numbers 6 to 10?

A ten frame has two rows of 5 boxes. Your student sees 5 on top and counts on: 6, 7, 8. Over time they start to see 7 as 5 and 2 without counting from 1. Draw one on paper and fill it with rolled socks or blocks.

Why are the letter o pictures fox and frog?

Few picture words start with the short o sound, so this week your student listens for o in the middle of short words like fox, frog and clock. Stretch the sound when you say it. The card games add words that start with o, like on and off.

What are tools at home activities for preschoolers?

Let your student use simple, safe tools with you: a flashlight in a dark closet, a key in a door and a ruler to measure a toy. Talk about what each tool helps us do. Adults handle anything sharp, hot or heavy, and put it away after.

What supplies do I need for week 14?

Paper, crayons, 10 rolled pairs of socks, a flashlight, a key, a ruler and a pillow or folded towel. Every activity also has a no-supplies swap, such as using fingers instead of the sock ten frame, so you can start with what you already have.
